Vertical Video (9:16)

Definition

Video rendered taller than it is wide, 9:16, which on a phone means 1080 by 1920. It fills the screen with nothing beside it. Every short-form feed defaults to it, and a horizontal clip dropped into one of those feeds gets letterboxed down to roughly a third of the space.

The arithmetic is what makes the format non-negotiable. A 16:9 clip dropped into a 9:16 feed is 1080 pixels wide and 607 tall inside a 1920-tall frame, so it occupies under a third of the screen and leaves black bars above and below it. The thumb is already moving.

Filling the frame is only half the job, because part of that frame is not yours. Platform interface reserves roughly the top 8% for the header, the right 12% for the action column, and the bottom 18% for the caption and controls. Composition that ignores those bands puts faces behind the share button and text under the username. Orange's renderer reserves them explicitly, so a logo placed top right lands inside the safe area rather than on top of the platform's own chrome.

Vertical is not universal, either. LinkedIn's feed favors 1:1, which is why a square export exists alongside the 9:16 one, and a tall video posted there gets cropped in the preview where it matters most.

The completion-rate advantage of vertical on mobile is real and frequently overstated. A vertical video fills the screen, which removes competing content from view, which removes one specific reason to leave. It does not make a dull video interesting. The format buys an uninterrupted canvas and nothing more.

Render at 1080 by 1920 and stop there. Higher resolutions get re-encoded down by every platform anyway, and the bitrate lost in that pass costs more visible quality than the extra pixels ever bought. Everything Orange renders comes out at that size by default.
